It is the fight every boxing fan wants to see and one that transcends the sport. Promoter Bob Arum believes the two fighters “owe it to the sport”.
For several years Boxing superstars Floyd Mayweather Jr. (45-0, 26 KOs) and Manny Pacquiao (55-5-2, 38 Kos) have been linked together for the biggest fight in sport but failed negotiations have scuppered the fight that would have the whole sporting World watching.
Bob Arum, who promotes “Pacman” believes the time is right to finally get the pair in the ring; to see who is the P4P number one.
Speaking with USA Today the veteran promoter said: "If people stop posturing, absolutely, it can happen. It's stupid if it doesn't happen. They owe it to the sport,”
"This idea that Floyd hates me or I hate Floyd is poppycock. Maybe the people around him are saying that. But Floyd and I, and certainly Todd (duBoef, Arum's stepson and president of Top Rank) and Floyd, have always had a wonderful relationship,” he said.
“These so-called writers are saying, 'Well, it can't happen, because Floyd hates Bob Arum.' Floyd doesn't hate me, like I don't hate him."
Manny Pacquiao looked rejuvenated in soundly thrashing Brandon Rios, last month, while Floyd Mayweather Jr. has kept to his usual high-standards winning comfortably twice, in 2013, against Saul Alvarez and Robert Guerrero.
Floyd, 36, and Manny, 34, can't go on forever and while there are still interesting fights out there for both against the likes of Timothy Bradley, Danny Garcia and Adrien Broner – it is the fight between the two that makes the most dollars and sense. 2014 hopefully will be the year it finally happens.
