With the biggest fight of his career hanging on the balance, the pressure was on Sergey "Krusher" Kovalev (24-0-1, 22 KOs) to deliver a win and retain his title. This was the only stipulation made by Bernard Hopkins in order to agree to an unification fight in November of this year. Kovalev sealed the deal by stopping Blake Caparello ( 19-0-1, 6KOs) halfway through the second round.
With the victory Kovalev continues his reign of terror in the Light heavyweight division and now sets his sights on the legendary Bernard Hopkins (55-6-2, 32 KOs).
"I respect Bernard Hopkins for taking this fight. When I came to America, it was dream to fight the best and now I am fighting, I have my chance. He says he is alien. He punch, I punch, then we see who is gonna go to Mars”, said Kovalev via a press release.
Hopkins’ motivation is the chance to make history by becoming the oldest undisputed light heavyweight world champion.
"Everything I do at this point in my career affects my legacy. I've set and broken many records, but becoming the oldest undisputed light heavyweight world champion is the goal and Kovalev stands in the way of that goal. He's another young, hungry fighter and just like the ones that came before him, he will leave the ring belt less” said Hopkins.
The unification bout between Kovalev and Hopkins is signed and even though an site has not been agreed to, Ringnews24 learned that Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, NY and Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ are being considered as possible venues.
